UPM hosts MICOLLAC 2014 to forge foreign linkages in the study of languages

PENANG – The Malaysia International Conference on Languages, Literatures and Cultures (MICOLLAC) 2014 hosted by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) will enable the university to build more foreign linkages to internationalize its higher education programmes.

This was stated by UPM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Fauzi Ramlan, when he launched the three-day conference that has Pustaka Prinsip as its main sponsor at a leading hotel here.

He said by gathering researchers from all around the world in a conference like this 8th MICOLLAC 2014, it would make it easier for them to determine the nature of the discovery of new research.

“This conference will also provide the much needed platform for researchers to explore potentially new areas for collaboration,” he said to the participants and speakers from about 20 countries.

These countries are  the United States, Scotland, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Japan, South Korea, United Kingdom, Taiwan, India, Thailand, Oman, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, Egypt, Canada and Malaysia.

MICOLLAC 2014 Head of Media Relations and Communications, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shameem Rafik-Galea, said the conference has a reputation as a comprehensive conference covering the areas of English language, literature and culture.

"This is an effort to widen the network of English language, literature and culture besides honing the collegiate spirit among the academics," she said.

MICOLLAC 2014 allows local and international educators and language planners to exchange views on past and current practices pertaining to the development of English language.

It is also a platform for participants to discuss with English experts from this country and abroad.

During the event Prof Dato’ Dr. Mohd Fauzi launched a book written by Dr. Arbaayah Ali Termizi. The book, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Shakespeare Appropriate in 60 Minutes” is published by UPM Press as a useful guide for anyone who is interested to stage the Bard’s play but feels that getting started is a tremendous challenge.

He also presented the prizes and certificates to the 5 winners of the Best Postgraduate Student Abstract Competition that was organised together with the Taylor Francis Group.
