UPM wins second place at IFT 14 Annual Meeting and Food Expo, New Orleans, USA

SERDANG, 24 Jun (UPM)  - A UPM team of five postgraduate students won second place at the Developing Solutions for Developing Countries (DSDC) competition organized by the Institute of Food Technologists Student Association (IFTSA), USA.

This year, the DSDC competition was held at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center on 23 June 2014, in conjunction with the IFT 14 Annual Meeting + Food Expo (21-24 June 2014).

The DSDC promotes the application of food science and technology and the development of new products and processes that are targeted at improving the quality of life for people in developing countries.

For the DSDC 2014, the theme was to develop marketable food products using filter cake (defatted soy meal and sunflower meal) from oil processing. Vegetable oil processing is a growing industry in Africa. The filter cake is low value by-product which is typically sold at a reduced price to the animal feed industry.

The DSDC team from UPM won second place for its innovative product “SunnySoy”, received USD 1000 and a certificate. The team consisted of three postgraduate students from Institute Bioscience (Lee Yee Ying, Tang Teck Kim and Phuah Eng Tong) and two postgraduate students from Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (Mo Shuen Yeing and Gan Yee Lin). The team received guidance from Prof. Dr. Tan Chin Ping from Faculty of Food Science and Technology and Dr. Tee Keng Kok from Putra Business School.

“SunnySoy” is a high-protein instant noodle that has been successfully developed from a low-cost defatted soybean and sunflower meal blend employing only simple processing method. These dark brown instant noodles can be eaten as a crunchy healthy protein snack or cooked within minutes to give strips of smooth, succulent and springy noodle that can be savored with a flavorful bowl of soup.

During a screening process held in February 2014, the team was shortlisted as one of the three finalists from 29 competing teams. Two other finalists were from Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia.
